We, as the faithful users of your great service, are no longer happy with you. This new update is disappointing. Actually, that's an understatement- this new update is horrible. Sorry to be blunt.
We understand that being a free service is hard. We get that you have to make money to keep your app alive. We know you have to make your investors happy. However, why can't you make us happy? At this point, it's not even about bringing back the "Best Friends" list feature. It's about bringing us back to the old version.
We never asked for a massive overhaul of an update. We never asked for an algorithm. We use Snapchat for it's simplicity, it's fun and easy-to-use chatting service. This new update is confusing. Quite frankly, it makes me want to delete the app.I don't need your fancy algorithm to tell me who I want to snap. I don't need it to tell me whose stories I want to see. This may be a really hard concept for you to understand, but I watch
people's stories whom I barely snap! I don't want to have to scroll through my feed or search someone's name to find a story I want to see, that's time consuming! I don't want all the chats, snaps, and stories combined in one place. It's cluttered and really unnecessary. I don't want an algorithm visualizing to me who I snap the most. I want my feed in chronological order and I want the stories separated from it!
I think the ugliest thing about this update is the chat screen feed. I don't need to see everyone's Bitmojis. It's an eyesore to see all of the faces, story circles, and group chat pics. I don't like that the received squares and chat bubbles are on the right and awkwardly small. I don't like that the message status icons are small and weirdly located under the display name. I really don't like that the friend emojis are not on the right, where it used to be easier to keep track of streaks and best friends.
It seems to me that you are moving away from the original purpose of Snapchat: quick, easy, and fun chatting with your friends. This service doesn't have space for an algorithm. It's really pointless. When I use my phone's text messaging service (or really any other chat service), the most recent text goes to the top of the feed. It's not organized by who I text the most. How ridiculous would that be? Imagine spending five minutes trying to find the chat with your grandma, whom you barely text, to send her a birthday text. Inconvenient and really stupid, right? So what's the difference between snapchatting someone and sending them a text? Absolutely nothing. (On a side note: Apple- don't you dare get any ideas!) You gave a simple function a complicated algorithm that completely messes it up.
What makes me really mad is the fact that the point of this update is to make you money. You ruined the simplest interface to promote publisher content. First of all, I don't want a whole page dedicated to the "Discover" section! I was already reading some of the content on a regular basis. It didn't need to be in my face for me to want to read it! Like I said before, we get you need to make money, but there is a better way to make it! (Hint: listen to your customers!)
I suppose you did this to gain publicity. A scheme. None of this update makes any sense. Everyone is tweeting about it, even celebrities. People, like me, are writing articles about it. Free advertising- Snapchat is all over the news. Then you'll eventually revert back to the original version and be hailed a hero company. Ah, I can see it now: The company that finally listened to its customers! Facebook, Instagram, take note! Snapchat swallowed its pride and won back the hearts of its users!
You people make me sick because your greed has overcome your integrity! All I see is a company desperate to keep its head above water, willing to drown its best friend (us) to keep itself alive. You had a great thing going, and then you destroyed it.
You "fixed something that didn't need fixing." Your massive update isn't going well and you aren't showing signs of changing it back. No one likes the new update, except you. Congratulations, you played yourself.
Why can't you just listen to your users?
Sincerely,
Every Snapchat User (ever)
